General Assembly and By-elections Thurs Sept 15 at 5pm

Mark your calendars for the first General Assembly of the 2016-17 school year!

GEOGRADS General Assembly:

  • Thurs September 15, 2016
  • 5:00pm-6:30pm in H-1267
  • Light lunch will be provided

In accordance with our bylaws, we also announce the nomination period for the by-elections for unfilled GEOGRADS council officer positions.  Nominations for council officer positions will be presented at the General Assembly. Three positions are available (see below for more details):

  1. President
  2. VP Social and Events (MEnv/DEA)
  3. VP Internal (MSc/PhD)

The agenda for the General Assembly will be announced on or before September 13th. Feel free to submit items to the agenda, such as endorsements, to gpe.grads@gmail.com until September 12th.

As always, delicious vegetarian and gluten-free foods will be served at this event!

 

By-election Nominations:

To nominate yourself for a position (see below for list of positions):

  1. Print and complete the nomination form (download here)  or take a copy from the Oasis.
  2. Collect at least three signatures from registered graduate students of the GPE department (MSc, MEnv,DEA, PhD).
  3. Present completed nomination form to the General Assembly on Sept 15, 2016 -or- to a GEOGRADS officer (Jasmine, Emory, Étienne, Marion)

Nomination period: Sept 2, 2016 – Sept 15, 2016.
Uncontested positions will be acclaimed at the General Assembly on Weds, Sept 15, 2016 unless a ballot vote is requested.
Contested positions will enter into a campaign period (3-business-days) followed by a ballot vote on Wednesday, Sept 21, 2016.

Elected officers begin their positions until May 31 1st 2017.

Eligibility for by-elections:

  • Candidates must be registered in the MSc, MEnv, DEA or PhD program in the Department of Geography Planning and Environment, and be a student in Good Standing with the Office of the Dean.
  • Candidates must not be graduating within the term of the position (i.e. Sept 2016 – May 31, 2017)

Available Positions:

  1. President
  2. VP Social and Events (MEnv/DEA)
  3. VP Internal (MSc/PhD)

Duties as described in the GEOGRADS By Laws (Article V):

The President shall be responsible for:

  1. Acting as President of the Board of Directors of the GEOGRADS corporation.
  2. Acting as Chairperson at all regular Council meetings, and at GEOGRADS General Assemblies.
  3. Arranging for the annual General Assembly to be held the subsequent academic year, irrespective of their presence therein.
  4. Overseeing the day-to-day management of the GEOGRADS, and ensuring all other Council members are performing their duties as defined below.
  5. Directing the implementation of Council resolutions.
  6. Acting as the liaison between the GEOGRADS and the GSA, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and all external organizations.
  7. Acting as the official spokesperson of the GEOGRADS.
  8. Publishing an Annual GEOGRADS report summarizing the GEOGRADS achievements and activities during the term.
  9. Creating committees and delegating unto them the powers and tasks necessary to fulfill the mandate of the GEOGRADS.
  10. Carrying out any other duty the council deems associated with the role of the President.

The two Vice-President Social and Events shall be responsible for:

  1. Managing the Graduate Lounge.
  2. Organizing guest lectures and other extra-curricular events.
  3. Organizing social functions.
  4. Carrying out any other duty the Council deems pertinent to the V.P. Social and Events portfolio.
  5. One Officer shall be from M.Sc./Ph.D. programs and one shall be from the M.Env./D.E.A. programs.

*  please note that only the VP Social M.Env./ DEA position is available for the 2016-17 by-election.  The VP Social M.Sc./Ph.D position is currently held by Emory Shaw.

The two Vice-President Internal shall be responsible for:

  1. Serving as the GEOGRADS liaison with the faculty, staff, and undergraduate student associations within the Department of Geography, Planning and Environment.
  2. Coordinating Geography, Planning and Environment graduate student representation on the University’s academic and administrative organs, along with the President.
  3. Carrying out any other duty the Council deems pertinent to the V.P. Internal Portfolio.
  4. One Officer shall be from M.Sc./Ph.D. programs and one shall be from the M.Env./D.E.A. programs.

* Please note that only the VP Internal M.Sc./Ph.D. position is available for the 2016-17 by-election.  The VP Internal M.Env./D.E.A position is currently held by Marion Macé.
