Higher student debt from increased tuition fees could cost Quebec

“MONTREAL – Increased student debt from higher tuitions could have severe repercussions on public funds, a new study from the Institut de recherche et d’informations socio-economique contends.

Researchers Eric Martin and Simon Tremblay-Pepin say the provincial government is creating a precarious situation when it encourages students to incur higher debt, much in the same way banks in the United States created a risky situation when they made it easy to obtain mortgages – a situation that ultimately threw the U.S. economy into a recession when homeowners began to default on their payments.”
