Faculty Update-08/03/2010

Dear GPE faculty,

We are writing to you on behalf of the Geography, Planning and Environment Graduate Students Association (GEOGRADS) to update you on the actions taking place regarding the strike. We will be sending out updates regularly.

As you all know GEOGRADS hosted a closed ballot vote on Monday, March 5, 2012 for all graduate students in the Geography, Planning and Environment department. It was voted 36 to 7 to go ahead with the strike.  A General Assembly meeting was held on Tuesday morning, March 6, 2012 where all GPE grads were invited to discuss what actions to take for the strike.

It was decided that:

-Students supporting the strike do not attend classes.

-Assignments will still be handed in as per the due dates or whatever the instructor decides.

-Some students have taken it upon themselves to block classrooms in a non-confrontational manner. As of now they have conducted themselves respectfully and have provided information to both students and faculty involved.

-Encourage and maintain open dialogue between faculty and Concordia administration.

-We fully support efforts related to alternative learning outside the classroom.

-Work together with GUSS (the undergraduate student association for the department of Geography, Planning, and Environment) in order to share resources. GUSS is one of the student organizations at the vanguard of the Concordia strike movement. They are well organized and have been highly effective in getting the message out about accessible educations.

-Open strike committee meetings which are open to all GPE students will be held daily to report on and modify strike actions, develop communications, and discuss any other business relating to the strike.

-A vote will be held weekly to decide whether to extend the strike or not for another week. The next vote will be held at the next General Assembly on Monday, March 12, 2012 at 9:00am.

The Concordia Graduate Student Association (GSA) held a vote on whether to go on strike or not on Tuesday, March 6, 2012. The GSA as a body voted to go on an unlimited general strike starting on Monday, March 12, 2012. How the strike is implemented is a decision that is up to departmental and/or faculty associations.
